For the temporary import of goods—such as items for exhibitions or equipment required for project work—the importer is required to:
- Obtain a Customs Business Code.
- Submit a customs declaration specifying the temporary nature of the import.
- Provide a deposit equivalent to the applicable customs duty, which is refundable upon re-exportation within the designated timeframe.
- If using an ATA Carnet, the deposit may be waived, and the goods can be temporarily admitted for up to six months or until the carnet’s validity expires.
What permits are required for transporting heavy or oversized cargo within the UAE?
Transporting heavy or oversized cargo necessitates obtaining special permits from relevant UAE authorities. The process typically involves:
- Conducting route surveys to ensure safe passage.
- Coordinating with local authorities for necessary approvals and permissions
- Arranging police escorts if required.
- Ensuring compliance with weight and dimension regulations to prevent infrastructure damage and ensure road safety.
What is a Customs Business Code, and why is it required in the UAE?
A Customs Business Code is a unique identifier issued by UAE Customs to companies engaged in import or export activities. It’s essential for submitting customs declarations and facilitating the clearance of goods. Companies operating in free zones or the mainland must obtain this code to legally process shipments through UAE ports and airports
What is bonded cargo, and how does it benefit importers in the UAE?

In the UAE, bonded shipments allow importers to defer duty payments, re-export without incurring local taxes, and store goods in customs-bonded warehouses. This is ideal for re-exporters and companies operating in free zones.
